I've just spotted a type of flood barrrier that can be made to emerge from a paved area to proptect property and then lowered again when not needed. This could work well by the duck pond and edge of the car park on Bridgegate in Hebden. It has a 50 year expected life apparently, the model is on the Aquobex website and called Spring Dam

I don't know much about flood defences but I thought a flood reservoir built on the currently empty large brown field site opposite the Stubbing would be a great use of the site. When floods were imminent a tunnel from the river going under the road could be opened  to lower water levels. The site could be planted with trees and be made beautiful! I know its expensive but surely it would help massively. Could it be a compulsory purchase order if necessary?!
