Stream management
I live immediately above Bottomley Clough in Walsden. I noticed the streams were not running through rough, rushy vegetation which slows them down. They were running through fields with short grass, grazed by sheep – not their normal route

Role of the canal
If some of the water had not flowed from the river into the canal, would the river levels have been even higher? Because the canal was breached, some places were flooded that were not expected

Different from previous floods?
This flood was different from previous years – there was a ferocity to the water flow. It didn't feel like a 'natural event' It felt like the water had been mismanaged. We have lived beside the canal near Callis for 24 years – the flooding of the canal is a new event

What can people do for themselves
I am a landscape gardener and would like to see people get involved in urban SUDS in their own gardens. Could be a relatively low cost campaign of small interventions having a cumulative impact (as Incredible Edible model). Exemplar projects in publicly visible areas, with info on how to implement your own green roof/disconnected downpipe/rain
